Houda Makansi arrived in Tucson in 2016 from Aleppo, Syria. As the civil war came to her city, Houda and her parents and younger sister would stay together every night because they did not know if they would wake up alive the next morning. Fleeing her beloved city was their only choice.  After she arrived in Tucson, she met many people who welcomed her and her family, including Melanie Cooley who became not only one of Houda’s closest friends but also a partner and co-host of a community radio show, “Mn huna: Finding Refuge in Friendship.” Mn Huna is Arabic for “From Here” and the show focuses on the experiences of people who have been resettled to Tucson as refugees and their stories of navigating their new community.
